As a mobile mechanic, my scanner is my lifeline. In a sea of options, it’s often hard to find one that stands out, but the VDIAGTOOL VD80 BT Lite does well to check all the boxes and then some. I’ve used it to reset service intervals with ease, monitor live data, actuate relays and motors, and perform transmission adaptation and sensor variation relearn procedures easily. Works well on domestic and foreign cars. There is also a built in function viewer that is very helpful in determining the device’s capabilities/compatibility with any vehicle, without the car needing to be present, or having to contact technical support (although they are very helpful and responsive).

As far as the hardware goes, I’m very impressed! The wireless range is great and the connection is reliable. The HE screen is bright and vibrant. The tablet scans lightning fast and responds quickly. Battery lasts all day. Camera, endoscope app and loudspeaker are premium touches. And the case itself is a very sturdy alloy construction. It’s a nice size and weight, and the rubber grips and comfortable and ergonomic. Overall, it’s a steal at this price point. Very solid entry-level device with features that usually fetch a higher price.

First off, the build quality is first rate. The case uses real hinges, not just plastic that bends. Great quality foam that protects and holds the equipment.

Comes with a dongle for connecting to the diagnostic port on your car. You can either connect the dongle to the scan tool via the included USB-c cable or let the scan tool connect wirelessly. The wireless connection seems just as fast as the wired connection, so I’m not sure why you’d ever use the wired connection.

It’s great being able to walk around the car with the scan tool wirelessly connected. I show an example of doing this in the video, but the wireless connection is an absolute game changer. I can just plug the dongle in before I get started and then walk around the vehicle. If I see or hear anything unusual I can check for codes or look at the live data to check possible sources of the problem. Not just that but I can bleed the ABS system by myself by taking the scan tool under the car with me and bleeding each wheel as I get to it.

I have another scan tool that cost nearly twice as much, but so far this scan tool does everything my other scanner does. The diagnostic reports look very professional and they’re handy for taking with me to the parts desk to make sure I’m not forgetting anything I need.

This tool comes with years of free diagnostics updates. To test product support I emailed them about what happens after that. They got back to me right away. For starters, if you didn’t just trade in your car for a brand new one, chances are you won’t need any software updates, but if you did, $144 will get you another year of updates.

Good construction, wireless, live data, and two-way communication. Communicates with all the computers in your car, not just the ECU like the cheapy ones that connect to your phone. I haven’t seen a more full featured tool for less money. This is a great value.

I’m a total car repair novice, but the VD80BT Lite made fixing my 2019 Hyundai Elantra a breeze. My check engine light came on, so I plugged it in, paired it with my phone, and it pulled a P0442 code (evaporative leak). The app explained it was likely a loose gas cap—tightened it, cleared the code, and the light never came back.
